One night, one event - shine a light of hope. On Friday October 18th, students all around Ireland will bed down for one night at their college or university. You are the future leaders, make the change now. Get your class, club or society together and stand in solidarity with families and individuals experiencing homelessness.
Since 2012 Shine A Light has raised over €4 million for people who are experiencing homelessness. In 2018, support for Shine A Light Night enabled us to help over 15,000 people who were facing homelessness and allowed our teams to move more than 500 families out of homelessness and into a home of their own. This year we need the help of students across Ireland to raise awareness on this crisis.
When many of us think of homelessness we think of people we see sleeping rough in doorways and on the streets. This is only part of a much greater issue. There are families, single men, and single women living in unsuitable, insecure and temporary accommodation all over Ireland. But you can make a difference. Will you give one night to change a lifetime?
You and your friends, classmates, Student Union, club or society can be a part of something amazing! Focus Ireland is working to bring about real and lasting change for the people who need our help. We are committed to preventing homelessness and supporting people into secure homes. Your support will allow us to reach people on the brink of homelessness and make a real and lasting difference to those individuals, families and children currently living in emergency accommodation. Your support will have an impact and will change lives.
Students from all around Ireland are being asked to take one night on their campus to sleep out and tackle homelessness by raising awareness and fundraising to provide services for those in need.
Focus Ireland believes that everyone has a right to a place they can call home. One of our core areas of work is preventing families and individuals becoming homeless in the first place. Homelessness is a frightening and shocking experience for anyone and, for a child, even a short period of being out of home can have a long-term and far reaching impact on their lives. We are working to prevent this from happening and to lessen the impact of homelessness for all.
By taking part and raising funds you are providing vital support to people on the brink of homelessness, allowing Focus Ireland to reach families who are facing these situations early to ensure they have the support they need to keep their home.
In 2018, there were organisations all over Ireland taking part in Shine a Light Night. The money raised allowed us to reach families with the right information, at the right time, to help prevent them from becoming homeless. We know that in order to be able to tackle this crisis effectively, we must prevent families from becoming homeless.
We need your support to reach further and support more families.
Propose taking part in Shine a Light Night to your friends, classmates, club, society, association or whoever is most appropriate for you. It’s about groups of people coming together to help those who are homeless or most at risk of homelessness.
This is a fully supported event. Focus Ireland will work with you to:

It is heart-breaking that 3,821 children in Ireland today have no home. The team and I in Bord Gáis Energy are committed to supporting Focus Ireland in the crucial work it does to help alleviate the factors that cause homelessness and increase support for those who are at risk of losing their home”. The sponsorship is in addition to the energy company’s ongoing partnership with the charity which since 2015 has seen Bord Gáis Energy donate more than €2.4m to help combat family homelessness.
