Impacts of Homelessness

Focus Ireland research into family homelessness has shown significant negative impacts on children and parents.  A study showed that negative impacts of homelessness on families can include damage to physical and mental health, relationship breakdown, job loss, behavioural problems among children and homelessness often had a negative impact on children’s education.

Young people (16-24) affected by homelessness may also experience considerable negative effects such as:

  • Early school leaving / may miss out on education
  • May develop health problems
  • Loss of support from family/friends
  • Risk of long term unemployment
  • Risk of becoming involved in drugs/substance abuse
