Given the ongoing Covid-19 crisis gripping the country, the annual Carlow Sleep-out as we know it, has been amended to meet current public health guidelines and protocols. It is not possible to host group public events at the moment so we are asking the people of Carlow to simulate a sleep-out in their own home and link in virtually with others taking part – we can come together to challenge homelessness by staying apart!
Join other people from throughout Carlow by simulating a sleeping-out at home on May 22nd . You will show your support for the men, women and children experiencing homelessness and to raise vital funds for Focus Ireland’s work.
As we face into an uncertain future, your support is more important and more powerful than ever. You can make a difference.
The number of people experiencing homelessness or in danger falling into homelessness is at a record high. The homeless and housing crisis is deepening, with children and young people the most severely impacted and they are also the most vulnerable during this CoVID-19 pandemic.
For over 4,000 children across Ireland, including children here in Carlow, the housing and homeless crisis is a shocking reality. The largest group of people among those who are homeless are 0-4 years.
Every aspect of a child’s life is impacted, from play to education to diet. However, thanks to the hard work of Focus Ireland staff around Carlow, we can support families as they seek to exit homelessness. We also prevent families from falling into homelessness in the first case.
What is the SIMULATED Carlow Sleep Out?
Simulate “To do something that looks real but is not real”
While the Carlow Sleep Out will not physically take place as planned we are asking you participate in the event by simulating a sleep out in your own home.
Can I still participate during the Covid 19 Pandemic?
Yes, this Simulated sleep out will be held by yourself in the safety and security of your own home and in line with all HSE Covid 19 best practice. Only you and existing household/family members can be present on the night.
Where do I participate in the SIMULATED Carlow Sleep Out?
Within the confines of your own home, you can simulate the sleep out anywhere on your property, on the couch, on the kitchen floor, on the back door step, on in the garden.
What is Sofa/Couch Surfing?
This is the practice of someone using a sofa or couch to sleep on, in a house or home that does not belong to them. They use the sofa/couch on a long term regular basis and are part of the hidden homeless which are never included in official statistics.
What do I need to do to take part?
Sign up and register online at www.focusireland.ie, and we will get back to do with your fundraising pack .
How do I fundraise?
Two simple ways, we send you an online link to create your own Carlow Sleep Out Everyday Hero online page and you contact through social media all your friends family and colleagues. We also have a physical sponsorship card which people can support you on as well.
Do I have an online funding page?
Once you are registered, we send you a Carlow Sleep Out Every Day Hero page link. This allows to create your own funding page which you can personalise for yourself, with a photo etc. Your Every Day Heron online funding page allows you to post your link on all your social media including Facebook, Twitter etc , while including it in any emails you send to family, friends and work or sporting colleagues.
Do I need to sleep outside?
No , but once you are in the safety and security of your own home and to simulate a sleep out we do encourage you not to sleep in your bed on the night but to try and reflect what it’s like to not to have your own bed, even for just one night!
